Not Smarter Than a Fifth Grader

"Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader," FOX's hit game show that debuted February of this year, held a special edition of the show with SEC college students as the contestants. Student and quarterback Matthew Stafford, who had been in Los Angeles for his post-midterms study break, was one of the contestants to appear on the show.

"When I heard they were looking for people to be on the show, I couldn't say no. I mean, how could I not be smarter than a fifth grader? I'm a fifteenth grader," Stafford said.

The format of the show has the contestants being asked questions from typical grade school subjects. The contestants are paired with fifth grade students who answer the questions as well.

Stafford was the third contestant of the day, following students from Alabama and Ole Miss, who had both failed to get past round one.

For his first question, Stafford chose a third grade level question on American History. Host Jeff Foxworthy asked Stafford, "Name three of the United States of America's thirteen original colonies."

A confident Stafford locked in his answer after the maximum amout of time for deliberation, and revealed his choices to be "Hogwarts, Narnia, and the moon."

After Foxworthy stated the correct answers, an argument ensued between Stafford and his fifth grade partner who correctly identified all thirteen original colonies. The fifth-grader revealed to Stafford that two of his locations were fictional, to which Stafford replied, "Wrong! I've seen photos of Lance Armstrong walking on the moon."

After Stafford's dismal failure, Foxworthy made several jokes regarding how Stafford's many sacks may have contributed to his mental abilities, but also that the repeated blows to the head could actually have made him smarter.

"You might be a University of Georgia quarterback if you've been to more football games in your life than classes," Foxworthy said.

As a result of the performance of Stafford and his colleagues from Alabama and Ole Miss, FOX has started working on a spin-off show called "Are You Smarter Than an SEC Student". The show's intended audience is people that find "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" too challenging.
