The women's volleyball team jumps to block the ball in a match against Boston College. Tech won both of its ACC matchups last weekend.
The Tech volleyball team hosted Boston College and Maryland this Homecoming weekend. The Jackets won both matches, beating the Terps 3-2 and sweeping the Eagles 3-0.
The Jackets overcame early errors and tough Maryland blocking in order to come away with the victory.
Tech survived the game, exchanging games back and forth throughout the match. Tech dominated in the first game, taking the game 30-21. While the Jackets set the tone for the match, the Terps stormed back and took control of the second game, tying up the match at one a piece with a 22-30 win. Tech won the next game, 30-24, but lost the fourth game 28-30. Going into the fifth game, Tech had lost its three previous tiebreaking games on the season. Despite their lack of success in previous decisive games, the Jackets were able to pull out the victory with a 15-10 win in the game.
The squad performed wellfor most of the match, but several miscues extended the match. During the fourth game, Tech had numerous errors that led to the eventual fifth game.
Top performers included Chrissy DeMichelis and Allie Niekamp. DeMichelis had a career-high 22 kills. Niekamp had her fourth straight double-double.
During the Maryland game, Tech participated in the "Dig for the Cure" program. Fans and people were allowed to either donate a certain amount of money per dig or a flat amount. The team recorded 74 digs on the night, including 17 digs from Michelle Kandell, Jordan McCullers and Niekamp. This year, the program tallied near $2,000.
The next night, Tech took on Boston College and won the match in straight games. Despite winning 3-0, Tech's average margin of victory was just four points, including a 33-31 win in the second game.
During that game, the Jackets fell behind 9-3 before coming back and knotting the score at 24-24. The team never looked behind, and won a close third game to take the match.
Talisa Kellog had 19 kills to anchor Tech's offense. Callie Miller contributed with 11 kills and five blocks
The Jackets continue their homestead with matches against conference foes N.C. State and North Carolina today and tomorrow, respectively.
