Concert Committee plans interesting shows, events
Many students have not heard of the Concert Committee, which was founded over 30 years ago. However, the committee has been in charge of many events students at Tech have at least heard of or attended, most notably being last year's Sting Break which headlined rap star T.I.
The committee has also brought performances to campus from artists such as Fuel, Cake, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Futurists, Ludacris, The Roots, Howie Day and Big Boi, to name a few. The committee has even more great events planned this year including hosting Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Tour on October 10.
Comprised of fifteen students, the Concert Committee also organized the Battle of the Bands contest and the Live Lunch series last year. The committee will continue the Live Lunches this semester, which take place every third Thursday of the month outside of Pandini's in the Student Center. These lunches feature different bands, mostly local artists and groups just getting their start.
"[Live Lunch] gives students a place to hang out and listen to music over their lunch break," said Scott Bancroft, head of the committee.
The Concert Committee is also planning a hip-hop show at the Ferst Center, which will feature competitions in breakdancing, emceeing, beatboxing and popping. In addition, the Committee is also working on putting together a rock show at Under the Couch featuring popular Tech bands.
The biggest event this semester, however, will be the Adult Swim Tour on October 10. The tour will feature performances by Ghostface Killa of the Wu Tang Clan and witchdoCTor.
Additionally, Cartoon Network will have two lounges on-site: one with couches and TVs playing popular Adult Swim shows and another featuring a t-shirt press where students can choose a design and have a shirt made right in front of them.
The event will be held at Yellow Jacket Park on the 10th starting at 8:30 p.m. It will be free to all students.
For students interested in music, the Concert Committee is a great way to get hands-on experience at all levels of producing concerts, from the early planning stages to the day of the show itself.
Heather Aquilino, who was originally a liaison between the Committee and another group but stayed on with the Concert Committee this year, said her favorite experience has been discovering the different types of events that the committee is able to organize.
"So far we've planned smaller events like Live Lunch as well as bigger ones like the Adult Swim Concert. We're also planning a few more events this semester, so that should be exciting too," Aquilino said.
The student body should be excited, according to Bancroft.
"We put on free concerts featuring very talented Tech artists, local artists, and national artists on your campus," Bancroft said.
"I hope we keep doing events that the students and the committee can get excited about," Aquilino said when asked about the future of the Concert Committee.
The Committee meets every Tuesday at 8:00pm. If interested in joining or learning more about the Concert Committee, visit their website at www.fun.gatech.edu or e-mail Scott Bancroft (scott.bancroft@gatech.edu).
