Freshman QB transfers to Michigan after spring at Tech

Freshman quarterback Steven Threet has chosen to transfer out of Tech after less than a year with the team, enrolling at Michigan.
The football team has yet to begin their season, but has already experienced several shake-ups in the rosters, most prominently at an already packed quarterback position.
Prized recruit Steven Threet has opted to transfer to Michigan after less than a year at the Flats. This is the second quarterback Tech has had transfer out in recent months, with Jonathan Garner transferring to Marshall during the spring.
"The biggest thing is that the two coaches that recruited me took jobs at other schools, and that happened after I got there. Nothing against the other coaches, because I like [offensive coordinator John] Bond and [Liam] Klein," Threet told the ajc.com.
The freshman cited that the reason for leaving was not based on the competition level, which is no less strong at perennial football powerhouse Michigan.
The quarterback position will have five men on the roster next season, with none slated to graduate until 2009. Taylor Bennett has established himself as the starting quarterback and Calvin Booker has emerged as his backup. Before Threet's departure, many had believed he had emerged as the front runner to be the backup for Tech.
Booker, a transfer from Auburn, sat out last season but has vaulted himself to second in the depth chart after impressing coaches in practices.
Josh Nesbitt, Kyle Manley and Byron Ingram are all currently listed on the roster. Tech has also secured a commitment from top quarterback prospect Sean Renfree to bring the total to at least six the season after next.
Renfree, a rising senior from Glensdale, AZ, is considered one of the best quarterback prospects in the nation and turned down offers from Arizona and Arizona State.
John Bond and the staff pursued a commitment from Renfree, who participated in a training camp for all potential prospects and those that have already committed in early July.
The offensive coordinator is in his first season as the offensive coordinator after a season at Northern Illinois.
Tech has also secured several commitments during these practices from high school recruits around the nation, with the number totaling eight. This could soon include William Green, a highly touted defensive lineman from Alabama.
Fall football practices resume on August 3. Players who will be able to participate in fall practice who were not able to participate in spring practice include fullback Mike Cox, wide receiver James Johnson, defensive lineman Adamm Oliver, defensive end Michael Johnson and safety Djay Jones.
