The golf team ended a successful season by losing in the NCAA championships which took place on May 31 through June 2. Tech finished the tournament in 26th place.

The Jackets needed to place 15th or higher to advance. Freshman Cameron Tringale ended his successful season as well by finishing eighth in individual competition of the NCAA Golf Championship.

After the first day of competition at the team champioship, the Jackets found themselves in last place. Tringale had the best round for Tech, shooting a one-over-par 73 round. Mike Barbossa shot a 75 and Kevin Larsen and Roberto Castro shot a 76 and 77 respectively to contribute to Tech's team score.

On the second day of competition on June 1, the Jackets were at the bottom of the standings after posting a 294 round the day before. Tringale posted a team low round by shooting a 70.

Larsen posted the other under par round for the Jackets, by shooting 71, which included six birdies. Tech's other two rounds that counted toward the team score were Barbosa with a 74 and Taylor Hall with a 79.

Going in to the last day of competition, Tech faced an uphill battle. It proved too much as the Jackets posted a dismal eight-over-par round 256, to finish 26th out of 30.

Tringale again posted an impressive round, shooting a 68. Larsen shot a 73, to finish in 63rd place. Barbossa, who ended his collegiate career, shot a 77. Castro finished out the team scoring for Tech by shooting a 78.

One bright spot out of the tournament was Tringale, who placed high enough to make the cut to advance to the individuals' portion of the NCAA championship.

"I wish the team had been playing today. It didn't feel the same with them watching and not playing," Tringale said.

In that portion of the tournament Tringale shot a 74, which was good enough for eighth place. Tringale completed his sixth top-ten finish of the year.

"He's very good fundamentally. He believes in himself, and he's had one of the best freshman years anyone has ever had," said head coach Bruce Heppler.

Three Tech players ended the year by being named to the All-America team. Tringale was named to the second team while Larsen was named to the third team. Castro garnered honorable mention.
