The Jacket softball team swept Boston College in a crucial ACC series.
Freshman Whitney Haller hit another pair of home runs to increase her season total to 21. Haller was honored by the ACC and Tech as a player of the week for her smashing week. Over the weekend, she broke the single-season conference records for home runs and RBIs.
In game one of the weekend series, the Jackets recovered from a seventh-inning four-run rally to defeat the Eagles. Sophomore Aileen Morales finished the game 4-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Savannah Brown’s seventh inning hit drove in the game-winning run. Haller earned her first win in relief. Overall, the Jackets scored a total of 12 runs and 14 hits.
Haller batted 2-4 with four RBIs and hit her 20th homerun of the season during the second game. Junior Daisy Paez went 2-2 with one RBI and Caitlin Lever went 2-3 with one run scored. As a pitcher, freshman Lacey Richardson earned the win in relief, allowing only two hits. Sophomore Whitney Humphreys allowed just one run and struck out two in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The Jackets finalized the sweep over the Eagles with a 15-7 win on Sunday. Haller crept closer to leading the nation this season in homeruns by smacking her 21st in the win. Haller, however, was not the only one to break records over the past weekend. Freshman Blair Shimandle hit two triples in the game to tie the single-game school record. Amy Hosier and Lever each hit home runs and drove in a pair of RBIs. Humphreys picked up the win, allowing just one run, one hit and earning a pair of strike outs.
Games on Wednesday against the Georgia State Panthers were cancelled due to inclement weather. The games will not be rescheduled.
The Jackets will face ACC rival North Carolina this weekend in Chapel Hill. The teams will battle for the title of the first place team in the ACC. The Jackets are currently in second place in the conference with a record of 10-5 while UNC has a record of 11-4. The winner of this weekend’s series will hold the first place title for the ACC.
