Breaking the Bubble

A lot of things went on outside the bubble of Tech in the past week. Here are a few important events taking place throughout the nation and the world.

Internal probe follows fireman sex scandal

Nineteen Sacramento firefighters are in trouble after being caught inappropriately using city fire engines-to meet women. Firefighters were caught cruising Sacramento bars and attending “Porn Star Costume Balls” with city fire engines in order to pick up women, and having sex inside the vehicles.

Final debate focuses on domestic issues

Fiscal policy and healthcare issues dominated Wednesday’s debate, as Kerry detailed his plan to lower healthcare costs.

Other topics of discussion included gay marriage, abortion rights, immigration polices and gun control.

FDA approves chip implant for humans

Similar to the chips found now in many pets, the VeriChip can store a variety of patient information that can easily be scanned by medical professionals.

About the size of a grain of rice, the chips can be inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes to complete.

Though current technology limits scanning access to a few feet, civil rights groups are concerned about the chip’s impact on issues of privacy as technologies advance.
