TEAM Buzz gets ready for repeat performance

By Matt Gray News Staff

TEAM Buzz, Georgia Tech's massive philanthropic activity in which students, faculty, staff, and administrators join together to perform community service around the Atlanta area, will be taking place on October 23.

Over 1700 people are expected to be involved in the various service events that have been organized.

As the third year TEAM Buzz (Tech Enhancing Atlanta Metropolitan) has occurred, there will be 40 service projects taking place for participants to choose from, with activities ranging from environmental issues to working with the homeless.

Registration for the event started in September and continues until Friday, October 15.

Approximately 600 additional spaces still need to be filled by participants. They hope, however, that many of those interested are waiting until the last minute to sign up.

"We're looking for more faculty and staff involvement," said Trey Childress, chairman of TEAM Buzz. To register, go to http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/teambuzz/.

For the first time, TEAM Buzz has been working with the alumni club in an attempt to get alumni in other parts of the country involved in service projects in their own communities, thereby making TEAM Buzz a national occurrence.

Six alumni groups have already agreed to participate, including those located in Raleigh-Durham, Houston, and Dallas-Ft. Worth.

The schedule for October 23 begins at 8:30 a.m. with a free breakfast. At 9 a.m., a kick-off rally will take place at the Georgia Tech Plaza, which will end at 9:30 a.m.

From then until 1:30 p.m., participants will work on their various service projects at their respective sites.

To conclude the day, there will be a party at Peter's Parking Deck until 3:30, with a free lunch provided to the participants.

TEAM Buzz was started two years ago in an attempt to increase the amount of philanthropy done by Tech. They have a committee to organize the yearly event.

The stated purpose of TEAM Buzz is to "promote a sense of community among various groups at Georgia Tech, to promote philanthropic spirit, and to utilize Georgia Tech to serve the Atlanta community."

The expected participation of 1700 people marks the largest involvement yet.

In preparation for next year, applications for TEAM Buzz's steering committee will be available at the Celebration party on October 23, with applications being taken until November 9.

Last year, despite rainy weather, around 1400 people became involved, with students painting fences, picking up trash, and planting trees.

In the previous two years, TEAM Buzz occurred a couple of weeks later into the school year.
